Baby Power

Baby Power is a 10-week parenting group to assist moms of children ages 0-6 in meeting their child’s needs while decreasing the risks of maternal depression and anxiety. Free transportation and child care (for children ages 0-6) provided. The next session of Baby Power will be beginning early February 2019 and will be meeting Tuesday evenings at the Dearborn Partnering With Parents office. Barbershop Talks

Barbershop Talks provides fathers of all ages, but especially teen fathers, a chance to meet other fathers from the community and gain support and encouragement. This is a free activity and food, haircuts, and raffles are always provided. Transportation is provided for those that are receiving Parenthood Case Management Services. This group is called Barbershop Talks because it has the feel of being in a Barbershop-men, young and old, fathers and their children receiving haircuts, while discussing topics that are essential for all men. Cooking Matters At The Store

Cooking Matters at the StoreTM equips families with the skills they need to maximize healthy decisions and stretch their food budget. Cooking Matters at the StoreTM will end with the $10 Challenge, an activity where participants use the skills they’ve just learned to buy a healthy meal for a family of four, for under $10. Participants take home a booklet full of recipes and shopping tips, as well as a reusable grocery bag. Please note, location is TBD!

Field Trip: Greenfield Village Little Learners

Greenfield Village Little Learners get a head full of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) with hands-on programming at Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation and Greenfield Village. Designed for curious preschoolers, playful activities focus on themed materials and then expand outward with storytelling, crafting, building and artifact exploration. Read Aloud

During interactive workshops participants will learn: about the importance of reading aloud, the benefits of reading aloud to children of all ages. How much time a parent should spend reading aloud to their child daily. enough to make a difference. They will be given resources to help in their quest to spending some read aloud time with their child. Each participant will receive an Adventure Reading Pack and hands-on instructions on how to use it.

Reading Is Fundamental

During an interactive workshop, participants will learn about the importance of reading and that reading is fun as well as informative. Resilience: The Biology of Stress & The Science of Hope

Role Reversal

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED. THANK YOU. The Poverty Simulation Workshop is a 2-hour hands-on, active learning experience about what it means to live without resources. In this role reversal, teens are given the opportunity to navigate the adult world as heads of the household, while the parents get to play the role of the children in the family. Participants experience realistic challenges in order to provide basic needs for the family. The parents will learn how difficult it is to feed your family, pay your bills, find employment, find childcare, keep kids out of trouble and make quality time for your family….. while living in poverty. Following the activity, there will be a reflective discussion and participants will be able to share their reactions.

Say And Play With Reading

Dialogic reading is a research-based technique that can be used effectively with children ages two through five. In dialogic reading, the adult encourages the child to participate in the telling of the story they’re reading together rather than just listening. Smart Connections Caregiver Workshop

Caregivers will learn the importance of taking care of themselves in order to better care for their children. Caregivers will increase their knowledge about how toxic stress/chronic adversity affect their child’s emotional, physical, and behavioral responses. Caregivers will learn how to support their children at home with the same strategies we are using at school and will expand their support networks through relationships with other parents. Staying in the Front Seat: Tools for Self-Care

Feeling stressed is a normal part of life, but how do we take care of our own physical, emotional, spiritual and relational needs when we feel stressed out by life? How do we find the time to take care of ourselves? Is taking care of ourselves selfish? This class will discuss how stress can impact us and will provide tools to help us practice self-care. You will leave the class with your personal self-care plan to help you feel more in control when stressful events happen.

Trauma Informed Yoga Workshop

Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences: Building Self-Healing Communities

One of the most serious public health threats facing the nation is childhood trauma. In the early 1990s the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study showed exposure to experiences such as abuse, neglect and household challenges during childhood can have lasting effects on physical health. The good news is the body wants to heal! This class will explain the ACE study, the impact of ACEs, and how to learn to cope and get through hard times.
